Why Detox Diets Are a Dead End

Detox diets promise immediate gratification: clearer skin, more energy, and rapid weight loss. From green juice cleanses to juice fasting, the idea is that these programs enable your body to rid itself of harmful toxins. But the thing is, your body is already set up to detox naturally. Your liver, kidneys, and digestive system work around the clock daily to remove toxins from your body. Actually, these organs are so competent at their tasks that they do not require any outside assistance. Detoxification programs, however, tend to entail starving your body of nutrients, limiting calories, or overwhelming it with sugar from fruit juices.
Rather than assisting, these extreme cleanses have the opposite effect. When you deprive your body of nutrients, you'll end up feeling lethargic, cranky, and deprived, positioning yourself for a binge and restriction cycle. In addition, the majority of detox diets aren't sustainable, and you'll feel depleted once they end. Rather than assisting your well-being, these diets create excessive stress on your body, holding you back from long-term wellness.
